The following duties are required by statute and administrative code and have traditionally been performed by school nurses under the direction of the school medical inspector.
- Examine every child to determine if any physical defect exists
- Review immunization records for pre-kindergarten to grade 6 pupils
- Maintain student health records
- Care for sick and injured pupils and arrange for an appropriate course of action
- Administer medication/treatment when necessary for pupils to attend school according to district Board of Education Policy
- Require physical examinations for new students, pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, second, fifth and child study team referrals
- Test for tuberculosis infection as required by the Department of Health and follow-up appropriately with students and employees
- Report to the Commissioner and/or the Department of Health the results of tuberculosis screening, scoliosis screening and immunization status
- Participate in the identification, referral and health appraisal for handicapped pupils with the child study team
- Provide special health care and related services to meet the needs of handicapped pupils
- Participate with other members of the staff in setting goals for the district health services program
- Lecture to teachers on communicable diseases and other health problems and concerns
- Observe and recommend exclusion of students who show evidence of communicable disease such as, but not limited to, pediculosis, scabies, tinea capitis and conjunctivitis
- Monitoring growth and development yearly
- Vision and hearing screening, referral and follow up
- Health counseling, supervision and teaching for pupils, parents and staff
- Conduct annual Health Fair for all 5th and 6th graders
